Language Arts
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING
- In the month of May, students are continuing to work on the alphabet. Students will be able to identify letters and letter sounds of the alphabet.
- We are continuing to work on spelling phonetically. That means sounding out a word slowly and writing down all the sounds that are heard.
- Students are focusing on persuasive writing, which means writing about opinions or ideas.
- We are continuing to identify and spell high frequency words.
- In reading, we are learning about characters, feelings, problems/solutions, cause and effect to dive deeper into a story. This helps students understand books better and be able to make meaningful connections to what they read.
HOME PRACTICES
- Have your child write a story and draw a picture to go along with it.
- Read with your child and ask them questions
- Examples of questions: What was the character feeling? What happened in the story? What does the story make you think of? What did you like or dislike about the story?

- Students are learning to compare two objects or events according to one or more attributes. They are comparing longer vs. shorter, taller vs. shorter, heavier vs. lighter, hotter vs. colder, etc.

Make all of this into a game. Have your child make you guess and have them tell you the correct answer.
- Have your child use objects around the house to create math problems. For example, I have two grapes and you give me seven more. How many grapes do you have altogether? You have 5 cookies and I ate two. How many cookies do you have now?
