I want to take a moment to recognize all the incredible individuals in our lives who embody the spirit and role of a mother. Today is a day to honor not only those who are mothers in the traditional sense but also everyone who nurtures, supports, and guides others, whether they are stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, guardians, teacher, or friends.

Each of you plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of our Bobcats, offering love, wisdom, and encouragement. Your impact is immeasurable, and our community is richer and stronger because of your dedication and care.

On behalf of our entire Pine Spring community, thank you for your boundless love and unwavering support. We celebrate you today and every day. Happy Mother’s Day!

Silver Diner Night 6th Grade Promotion Kindergarten Promotion Parent Input for Class Placement for 2024-2025

At Pine Spring, we are preparing classes for the 2024-2025 school year. The school staff works collaboratively to determine the best setting for each child.  It is the task of the grade-level teachers, specialists, and administration to determine the distribution of teachers and students to optimally organize classroom assignments for next year.  A variety of factors, such as student personalities and academic abilities, are also considered as we create our new classes.  Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollment and teachers moving to a new assignment. Pine Spring families can assist us in determining class placement by sharing their insights about their child with respect to academic and behavioral information here.  Please note the following: We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement. Please be mindful when sharing about a student that is not your own child. We will only acknowledge language that you would want another family to use to describe your own child. Completion of the form is optional; however, the deadline for any correspondence is May 19, 2024.

Pine Spring SCA Movie

Again this year, our SCA officers have put together a movie night for the community. They have worked together as leaders to organize and advertise for this event, and we are excited to support them in making this another fun filled night for all of our students.

In order to ensure that we can accurately prepare for the event, we will be sending home flyers, and families will need to RSVP by May 23rd.

Please note that children must have an adult stay with them to participate.

We're excited to announce a fun and engaging way to choose our end-of-year SCA movie: a Penny War! Here’s how it works:

  • Starting Monday, each of the 3 movie choices will have its own jar located in the cafeteria.
  • Students cast their vote by adding coins to the jars. Pennies add positive points (1 penny = 1 point), while other coins like nickels, dimes, and quarters are used to subtract points from other movies (e.g., a nickel subtracts 5 points).
  • Remember: We're keeping it just to coins, so no bills, please!

The movie jar with the highest score at the end will be the one we watch together to celebrate a fantastic year. Get ready to make your vote count in the most coin-tastic way possible!

No Smartwatches for Testing

During the normal school day, the FCPS SR&R allows students to wear smartwatches as long as the phone and text functions are off. However, during SOL testing, students are not allowed to wear the watch to the testing location. We are asking that you have all students refrain from wearing their smartwatches during testing days. This will help to ensure that the watches are not lost or stolen.

As always, phones are expected to be off and in students' bookbags during the school day.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Symptoms and Illnesses Can My Child Go to School? Parent is Sick, Stressed, Hospitalized

YES - If you are sick, your child still needs to attend school. Your illness does not excuse your child from attending. Plan for these days. Ask a neighbor, relative or spouse to take your child to and from school.

Chronic Illnesses (Asthma, Diabetes, Sickle Cell, Epilepsy etc.)

Chronic illness is a long-lasting condition that can be controlled but not cured

YES – As long as your child’s symptoms are controlled, your child should attend school. School personnel are trained to assist children with chronic illnesses and related health care requirements.

Child Doesn’t Want to go to School

Frequent crying, fear, anger, not wanting to socialize, behavior change, stomachache, nausea

(These can be signs of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, or fear)

YES – You should keep your child in school but try to determine what is causing the changes. Talk to school personnel and consult a health care provider. Your child may be experiencing bullying or trauma, may be behind in schoolwork or not getting along with others. Persistent Indicators of distress may require support from school personnel or health care professionals.

Cold Symptoms

Stuffy nose/runny nose, sneezing, mild cough, mild sore throat, earache

YES - If your child can participate in school activities school should be attended.

Advanced Academic Program Spring Newsletter

GovDelivery1 month 3 weeks ago

AAP Newsletter

Families, please find attached the Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Spring Newsletter, with information about screening for Subject Specific (Level II), Part-Time (Level III), and Full-Time (Level IV) Services as well as an overview of the continuum of Advanced Academic services in FCPS. If you have any questions, please reach out to Tracy Haynes, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Haynes.

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.

• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth. Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
  • Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Full-Time (Level IV) Services

Screening for full-time (level IV) AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for full-time (level IV) services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. ο Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. ο The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advancedacademics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

  • Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
  • Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content. Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Paw Print Topics: Music Concert Integrated Reading and Writing Assessment (IRW)

Beginning this school year, Fifth grade students in the district who take the SOL Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component includes one nonfiction reading passage followed by four to six multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage.

Pine Spring fifth graders will complete this component on the morning of April 9th. Please prioritize their attendance on this day by ensuring your student is present the morning of the assessment.

Parents/guardians may choose to refuse participation in the IRW component while still agreeing for their student to participate in the required SOL Reading test. The IRW component does not fulfill federal participation requirements or influence school accountability calculations. Decisions about how the IRW  results will be communicated to families and teachers this year is pending additional reporting details from the Virginia Department of Education.

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3)

The online Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Third Edition (NNAT3) will be administered to first graders on Monday, April 8th. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school.

The NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. Students are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

If your child will be participating in the WIDA testing, a notification letter was sent home. The dates for testing are below.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school. If you have any questions about this test, please contact Jennifer Ganci at [email protected].

Paw Print Topics: AAP February Updates VDOE Winter Virginia Growth Assessment Parent Reports

The Virginia Department of Education announced the release of the new Parent Report covering the results of this year’s Winter Virginia Growth Assessments for students in grades 3-6.

An example of the new Parent Report as well as additional resources for parents can be found on the Parent & Caregiver Resources for Assessments webpage on the VDOE website.

The Parent Report  informs parents of their child’s test scores, shows if the child needs additional support, is considered at-risk of falling behind, or if the child is generally well prepared at this point of the school year. Parent Reports will be available in ParentVUE starting at the end of January.

Principal Pop-In Winners!

Friday, Mrs. Bowser’s class won the first "Principal Pop-In." This initiative rewards classes for perfect attendance on the day that Ms. Yacubovich makes a surprise visit and announces, “PRINCIPAL POP-IN!”. Mrs. Bowser's students showcased their commitment to being present and ready to learn, earning them a special attendance prize. Let's celebrate their dedication and teamwork. Well done, Mrs. Bowser's class, for setting a wonderful example for the whole school!

Social Emotional Learning Screener

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 between February 26th – March 15th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

If you have any questions, please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Leah DeLew, at [email protected].

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to [email protected].

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

Paw Print Topics: Celebrating 91 Days Together

Pine Spring came together to celebrate our dedicated students who have shown positive attendance with  5 or fewer absences. Your commitment to their education is truly commendable, and we appreciate your support.

Currently, students with more than 8 absences this school year are considered chronically absent, regardless of whether these absences were excused or unexcused.

This year, the impact of missing school extends beyond individual student achievement; it also has implications for our school's state accreditation, much like the Reading and Math SOL. Currently, 17% of our students fall into the category of chronically absent for this time of year. Please be aware that "absent" in this context means missing the entire school day, and it does not include students who arrive late or leave early.

We urge you to join us in our efforts to meet the state's expectation of less than 15% of our students being chronically absent. There is still time to make this happen, and together, we can ensure a brighter future for our students and maintain our school's excellent standing.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Pine Spring. Together, we can make a significant difference in our students' lives.
